Rebecca Stern, an alumna who graduated earlier in 2016, recently won a TMS Structural Materials Division Scholarship to continue her studies at UC Berkeley. The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) offers a variety of scholarships for student members, funded by the TMS Foundation.
“The generous Structural Materials Division Scholarship benefits me greatly by reducing some financial stress. It also allows me to network with members of TMS. It’s nice to be recognized for my achievements because it encourages me to continue to work hard,” Stern said on the TMS website.
Rebecca Stern was a materials science and engineer major and mathematics minor who is passionate about materials modeling. As an undergraduate, she completed several research projects, including an internship for Pfizer Inc. the summer after her junior year, where she researched computational predictions of pKa numbers-a measure of molecule dissociation in solution. She then worked on her senior capstone design in conjunction with Pfizer Inc.
“Rebecca wanted to do research her junior year. After two years of classes, she wanted to do something more adventurous,” said Dr. Serge Nakhmanson, her research advisor. “Our Department Head noticed her and wanted to get her involved in some projects.” Dr. Nakhmanson’s group was developing a collaboration with Pfizer at the time, and Rebecca was eager to get involved.
